Arizona City Hazardous for Cyclists

The city of Payson, Arizona is particularly dangerous for bicyclists. According to the Payson Roundup, the bicycle accident rate for bike-motor vehicle crashes is five times above the national average. Typically the motorist is at fault in these accidents, but residents in Payson claim that cyclists often fail to yield to traffic. Chief Don Engler claims he has received many calls lately from motorists about cyclists pulling out into traffic without even looking. He says there have been countless calls about narrowly avoided collisions. “I have had quite a few comments from citizens and volunteers on patrol who say bicyclists are failing to yield at stop signs,” he says. “Bikers need to review the law.” The law in Arizona holds bicyclists to the same standards on the road as motorists. Officer Returns to Work After Serious Bicycle Accident

A police officer from Mason, Ohio is back on the job after an impressive recovery from a traumatic brain injury, according to MasonBuzz.com. Officer John Cullen nearly died after an off-duty bicycle accident back in May. He was out cycling alongside his dog near his Loveland, Ohio, home when the accident occurred. Doctors initially told Cullen it would be 6 months before he could return to work and a year before he could resume his regular patrol duties. Witnesses reported seeing Cullen lose control of his bike before falling. Cullen’s dog then ran into the street and stopped traffic. Cullen was rushed to the hospital, where physicians initially believed he suffered a concussion. He had actually fractured his skull in two different places. He spent 14 days in intensive care. Tennessee Cyclist Critically Injured In Accident

A Tennessee cyclist suffered serious injuries after a bicycle accident when a vehicle struck him, according to DNJ.com. Witness Cole Elliot could hear the collision and knew exactly what happened before even looking. The name of the cyclist was not available, and his injuries are “severe.” “I was scared to look back,” said Elliot. “The man on the bicycle wasn’t moving. I ran inside to get my boss. He ran out there and tried to save the man’s life.” Elliot’s boss, Gary Fisher, attempted to treat the cyclist when he noticed witnesses just standing around. “I pushed everyone out of the way and gave him compressions,” says Fisher. “He had multiple fractures, and was bleeding from his nose and mouth.
