Cycling Advocate Calling For More Los Angeles Checkpoints

Los Angeles cycling advocate Alex de Cordoba is thankful to be alive after a bicycle accident nearly claimed his life in November. The hit-and-run accident left him with life-threatening injuries, and now he is calling for action to improve bicycle safety in Los Angeles. In a Huffington Post column, de Cordoba said he began to notice drivers’ license checkpoints in the city after the accident. The checkpoints are similar to DUI checkpoints and are meant to weed out drivers with suspended licenses or no license at all. “An estimated two million drivers are unlicensed,” says de Cordoba. “Either they never got a driver’s license, or their license has been suspended. More than half of all people driving with a suspended license were convicted of a DUI. Half of all hit-at-run collisions involve unlicensed drivers. Cyclist Struck By SUV On Road

A 23-year-old woman is injured after a car/bicycle accident in San Diego, according to SignOnSanDiego.com. According to police reports, the accident occurred on College Avenue near Cresita Drive. According to San Diego Police Officer Dino Delimitros, the Hyundai SUV struck her as she was riding along the street. According to reports, the cyclist was riding in the slow lane and the vehicle did not leave enough room when passing, clipping the bike. The young woman fell after her bike hit the curb. She suffered major injuries and fractures to her face. The driver stopped and cooperated with police. Some witnesses said that there were parallel-parked cars on the side of the road, leaving less room for the cyclist. Pedestrian Sues City After Bicycle Accident

A pedestrian who was injured in a bicycle accident may now sue the city of New York for $3 million, according to Patch.com. Dana Jacks, 37, was crossing a road in Prospect Park in New York when she was struck by a cyclist. She suffered serious head and brain injuries, according to reports, spending two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit and nearly a month in the hospital. “My recovery is ongoing and I am receiving wonderful care,” said Jacks. “I feel very fortunate to have an amazing support system of friend and family.” Jacks is now planning to sue the city and claims that the park is dangerous for pedestrians.
