Make Sure Your Gift Is ‘Complete’ This Year

San Diego health officials are reminding those giving or donating gifts to children to keep safety in mind. If you plan on donating—or giving in general—a bicycle, skateboard or a scooter, remember to include a helmet as well. If a child receives a gift, they may not want to wait for all the safety equipment before testing it out. Officials want to make sure that all the gifts this year are “complete,” according to KBPS.org. “During the past year, 222 children under the age of 15 were injured riding their bikes, scooter or skateboards in San Diego County,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. “It’s estimated that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by approximately 85 to 90 percent.” Make sure the helmet is appropriate for the gift as well, and will fit the recipient. Bicycle Safety Advocate Struck By Car While Riding

Avid cyclist Patrick Ytsma, 53, is still recovering from injuries he sustained in a bicycle accident in Pennsylvania, according to MCall.com. Ytsma was riding when he an elderly woman struck him with her car. According to friends, Ytsma is an advocate of bicycle safety rules and is always urging cyclists to be cautious. The name of the driver was not released and police are still investigating the accident. Ytsma, as always, was wearing a bicycle helmet. “I thought he’s the one person who would not have an accident because he has been cycling his whole life,” said Itie Ytsma, his mother. “I’m so upset.” Ytsma is very well known in the local cycling community. Teenager Killed In Bicycle Accident, Reportedly Not Wearing Helmet

A 17-year-old died in a bicycle accident in Nevada, according to TheSpectrum.com. The accident occurred on Sunset Boulevard in St. George, Nevada. The cyclist crashed at an intersection and struck his head on the pavement. He was airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital. No other people or vehicles were involved, according to police reports. The name of the victim has not been released. Witnesses say he swerved around pedestrians before crashing into a rock landscaping area on the side of the road. He was not wearing a bicycle helmet.
