Cyclist Continues Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury

North Carolina cyclist Ibrahim Myers continues his path to recovery from a traumatic bicycle accident in June of 2011, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Myers, 36, suffered severe brain injuries after colliding with a van. Myers was not wearing a bicycle helmet. Myers remains in a rehabilitation facility at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation in Winston-Salem. It may be a while—if ever—before he returns to cycling, but the fact that he is alive is a miracle in itself. He has lost the majority of his motor skills. “He looked at mom out of the blue and did the ‘I love you’ sign with his hand,” said his brother, Michael Myers. Myers, leaving his shift as a deliveryman for a downtown sub shop, collided with the van shortly before 11 p.m. His family did not expect him to survive. “In June, there wasn’t any sign that he was going to pull…

Officer Returns to Work After Serious Bicycle Accident

A police officer from Mason, Ohio is back on the job after an impressive recovery from a traumatic brain injury, according to MasonBuzz.com. Officer John Cullen nearly died after an off-duty bicycle accident back in May. He was out cycling alongside his dog near his Loveland, Ohio, home when the accident occurred. Doctors initially told Cullen it would be 6 months before he could return to work and a year before he could resume his regular patrol duties. Cullen was rushed to the hospital, where physicians initially believed he suffered a concussion. He had actually fractured his skull in two different places. He spent 14 days in intensive care. Doctors medically released Cullen to return to work at full capacity on December 5, far ahead of schedule. “It was…

Helmets Are Only the Beginning

Helmets may be the most well known aspect of safe cycling, but some argue that wearing a bicycle helmet is only one step toward cycling safely and preventing injury in a bicycle accident. Many argue that while helmets may help to prevent some injuries, they keep riders far less safe than a basic knowledge of bicycle and road safety would. After all, helmets can do nothing to prevent accidents. Helmets have become the easiest, most visible way to promote safe cycling, but that is just the beginning. Statistics also show that since helmets became widespread, the rates of head injury have been on the rise. Granted, the spike in bicycle related casualties does not account for the much higher number of people who now cycle for transportation, often on busy city roads. Among those who cycle safely, experts agree that helmet usage can help prevent serious…
