Tips for Beginner Cyclists

Cycling is a fantastic sport and pastime. It’s fun, thrilling, and relaxing all at the same time. If you’re considering joining the cycling community, dwell on it no longer and just do it! We promise we don’t bite. We love cycling here at CA Bike Safety and are always more than eager to get more people to join the club. To help ease you into it, we share some helpful tips for beginner cyclists.

Invest in basic biking gear.

The first thing you want to do when getting into cycling is building up your gear set. You will want to gather all your equipment, from your helmet to your bike. When shopping around for your gear, it’s natural to become overwhelmed. With so many options, deciding what to get can quickly become frustrating. Additionally, the price tags that come with some don’t help. But, not to worry! You don’t need the most expensive and top-grade gear to have a fun and safe experience. Visiting your local biking shop will allow you to get invaluable help from biking experts. They can help you find the right gear that meets your needs and budget. Working with your local bike shop will also allow you to get correctly fitted for your equipment, so you know everything you’re getting will be worth your while.

Familiarize yourself with the basics.

After gathering all your gear, the next thing you want to do is to familiarize yourself with the basics. It’s imperative that you take the time to read up on your local biking laws. The laws were made for a reason. They were made to ensure everyone’s safety. Knowing the rules can help keep you safe and allow you to stand your ground should any incidents involving motorists occur. It’s crucial for you to know your rights. Versing yourself in the law will give you clear expectations for yourself and motorists.

Set goals for yourself.

Once you’ve got all your equipment and have familiarized yourself with the laws of the road, you next want to devote some time to setting some goals for yourself. Ask yourself what you want out of cycling. Whether you’re getting into it to get active, join a group, socialize, or whatever else, write down your goals and actionable steps to help you succeed. Some helpful questions to ask yourself include the following:

  • How many times a week do you plan to cycle?
  • How long (miles/time) do you intend to spend each time?
  • Do you plan on riding alone? Or with a group?
  • What cycling groups are there near you?
  • Do you plan on participating in a race?
  • When do you plan on doing so?

Having a clear plan will allow you to make the most of your cycling experience and will allow you to thrive.

Time to get to it!
