Bicycling is one of the best ways to enjoy lovely Southern California, and the combination of beaches, great weather and many bike paths make for a cyclist’s paradise. With other cyclists, motorists and pedestrians to worry about it certainly is not the safest hobby, but there are things you can do to minimize the risk. Here are some bicycle accident statistics, provided by the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (released in 20210): 630 cyclists died on the roadways in 2009 in the United States—this is down from 718 in 2008. There were 1,003 fatalities in 1975. 2% of all traffic fatalities in 2009 were from bicycle accidents. 51,000 cyclists were injured in bicycle accidents in 2009, up from 43,000 in 2007. Arizona City Hazardous for Cyclists

The city of Payson, Arizona is particularly dangerous for bicyclists. According to the Payson Roundup, the bicycle accident rate for bike-motor vehicle crashes is five times above the national average. Typically the motorist is at fault in these accidents, but residents in Payson claim that cyclists often fail to yield to traffic. Chief Don Engler claims he has received many calls lately from motorists about cyclists pulling out into traffic without even looking. He says there have been countless calls about narrowly avoided collisions. “I have had quite a few comments from citizens and volunteers on patrol who say bicyclists are failing to yield at stop signs,” he says. “Bikers need to review the law.” The law in Arizona holds bicyclists to the same standards on the road as motorists. Cyclist Continues Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury

North Carolina cyclist Ibrahim Myers continues his path to recovery from a traumatic bicycle accident in June of 2011, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Myers, 36, suffered severe brain injuries after colliding with a van. Myers was not wearing a bicycle helmet. Myers remains in a rehabilitation facility at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation in Winston-Salem. It may be a while—if ever—before he returns to cycling, but the fact that he is alive is a miracle in itself. He has lost the majority of his motor skills. “He looked at mom out of the blue and did the ‘I love you’ sign with his hand,” said his brother, Michael Myers.
