Cyclist Killed After Becoming Pinned Beneath Truck

A cyclist in Corona Del Mar was killed after she was pinned beneath a truck making a right hand turn, according to sources. Sarah Leaf, 29, lost control of her bicycle and fell between the tires of a truck. The truck driver did not notice and proceeded to drive away, crushing Leaf. There has been an outcry from the local cycling community after charges were not filed against the driver. “It was a very, very unfortunate accident,” said Newport Beach Police Chief Jay Johnson. “I caution you to keep that in mind. I think the natural reaction is to go on the offensive. We look for facts and what do the facts show us. Cycling Community Rallies in Support of Accident Victim

A large group of cyclists in San Antonio, Texas gathered for an organized ride to benefit bicycle accident victim Monica Caban, according to MySanAntonio.com. Caban, 39, was struck from behind by a car while riding on October 20. The crash left her paralyzed from the waist down, and doctors have said they are doubtful she will ever walk again. Caban, a mother of two, was hit while riding along Interstate 10 with a friend, training for the Ironman in Arizona in November. Caban completed the Florida Ironman last year. Caban was hit by a truck and flung 30 feet. The impact immediately severed her spine. The San Antonio cycling community rallied in support of Caban, as well as to take a stand against inconsiderate motorists. College Student Killed in Bicycle Collision

A female college student at St. Mary’s University in Indiana was killed in a bicycle collision, according to NBC News. According to reports, the victim was riding near campus, in the dark and the rain, when she collided with a car. The victim was identified as Ziqi Zhang, a 19-year-old student from China. Zhang was pronounced dead on the scene of the collision. The accident, which has shaken the small community, remains under investigation. Reports indicate that Zhang was riding without a helmet and was wearing dark clothing. “Our primary focus at this time is helping the students who are friends with her and the faculty members, very close to many of the faculty members here, helping them deal with this news and we have counselors available whenever they may need,” said Gwen O’Brien, St. Mary’s spokeswoman.
