Cyclist Thankful After Being Saved By Good Samaritans

A bicyclist in Utah is thankful for the people who came to his rescue, referring to them as heroes.  23-year-old Paul Heaton, a student at the University of Utah, was just released from the hospital in late October.  Heaton was pinned underneath a car before good Samaritans lifted it off him.  He said he misjudged the speed of the oncoming car and forgave the driver. “I understand.  Things happen, man.  It’s OK.  I forgive him,” says Heaton, who served for the National Guard in Iraq.  “It’s an accident.  Accidents happen.” He still is healing—his right elbow is shattered, his left forearm is fractured and his shoulder and other elbow are severely injured.  His bicycle helmet prevented a major brain injury—or possibly saved his life.  Another thing that possibly saved his life was the help of the strangers.  When they approached him as he was pinned under the car he told…

Long Beach Researches How To Allocate Funding For Bicycle And Pedestrian Safety

Long Beach city officials are conducting their fourth annual bicycle and pedestrian count for research purposes, according to the Daily 49er.  The purpose of the count and survey is to let the city know where they could improve and allocate resources for pedestrian and bicycle safety. It is refreshing to see a community not only allocate funds for bicycle safety, but to take the time to make sure they are spending the money wisely.  Wouldn’t you like to see this sort of action taken in your…

California Governor Vetoes Bicycle Safety Bill, Aims To Improve It

California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bicycle safety bill earlier this month, claiming it would cause more accidents than it would prevent, according to The Los Angeles Times.  The proposed legislation required all motorists to give cyclists a 3-foot space while passing them and slow to 15 mph.  Governor Brown was concerned that the new law would lead to an increase in car accidents and put both motorists and cyclists at a greater risk. “On streets with speed limits of 35 to 40 mph, slowing to 15 mph to pass a bicycle could cause rear-end collisions,” said Governor Brown.  “On other roads, a bicycle may travel at or near 15 mph, creating a long line of cars behind the cyclist.” Governor Brown says he is willing to work on the bill so long as his concerns are addressed.  What do you think? Are his concerns valid, or would you like…
