How to Put Together an Epic Group Ride

Environmentally conscious bikers in traffic in San Francisco, California. Motion blur on the subjects - faces unrecognizable.Regular cyclists love nothing more than a great group ride. A fun day of riding with good friends is an excursion that everyone remembers. The prospect of putting together an epic group ride may seem like a daunting task, but it can be super simple and totally worth thinking about.

  • Plan the ride around the stop. The entire ride will be described as either awful or epic depending on the stop(s). A popular option is food. Everyone loves food. Pick a place to stop and eat a great lunch that has a good view, good food, or some new niche place everyone wants to try because it’s located somewhere past grandmother’s house over the hills and through the woods. A good stop will make any ride worth it.
  • Let everyone know what they’re getting into ahead of time. If you are the type who loves to keep people in the dark, find a different outlet for your mysterious proclivities. Letting people see the route beforehand will help people decide whether or not they want to go and will prevent any bellyaching mid-ride.
  • Be prepared for anything. Carry a spare tube, a pump, some patches, and whatever else you may need. A flat tire will most certainly ruin a day. However, if you are prepared to deal with that issue quickly, then you will in fact be seen as a super hero with awesome cosmic powers for at least a month.
  • Finish strong. Make sure that the finish is worth the ride. Plan to end the ride at local swimming hole so everyone can take a dip, or maybe set up some sort of group barbeque in someone’s backyard. Whatever cool idea you have, plan it so that everyone can recharge a little and enjoy some lively conversation about the epic group ride they just went on.
