New Product Provides Cyclists with Bike Lane

Riding at night and riding on roads without bicycle lanes are some of the greatest dangers facing cyclists. A new product may help to eliminate some of the risk, however. The new product, called Xfire Safety, illuminates a personal bike lane on the road or pathway for the cyclist. Xfire uses lasers mounted on the bike to display lanes on each side of the cyclist, visible to motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists even under headlamps and streetlights. The device uses two 5-milliwatt red lasers to project the lane, powered by two AAA batteries and retails for $39.99. It also serves as a standard tail light. Without having tested this product, the Bonnici Law Group certainly cannot outright endorse it. XFire is pending approval from the US Food and Drug Administration. As the cycling community grows across the nation, it is more important than ever that everyone is aware of bicycle safety laws. This video from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is full of valuable information and tips for new and experienced riders alike. Safety should be the top priority for all cyclists, so if you have children, be sure to teach them safe habits from a young age. Here are some statistics from the NHTSA: Sixty-nine percent of all cycling fatalities occur in urban areas. Approximately 28 percent of fatal bicycle accidents occur between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The average age of a fatal bicycle accident victim is 41. Back To School Cycling Safety

With school returning this fall, millions of children across the country will be riding their bicycles to school. Cycling to school can be a healthy and fun alternative to riding the bus, but parents need to be aware of the dangers and ensure safety for their children. Of all traffic fatalities recorded in 2009, 630 were cyclists, representing 2 percent of all deaths. Seventeen percent of all cyclists injured in accidents in 2009 were age 14 or younger. Keep these helpful tips in mind to ensure your child does not become a statistic: Map out a safe route for your child to ride to school, and establish how long it takes to ride so you will know to take steps if your child does arrive home or to school on time.
